Introduction
World widespread pandemic COVID-19 originated from
Wuhan city of china has pressed the world economy in a critical situation.
Apart from economic recession countries are facing social recession as well.
Societies are formed from social people i.e. aggregate of people living
together in a more or less ordered community. A human being is a social animal, it
is very hard to survive without society since every human being is connected with
society if he or she separates himself or herself still they will be in connection
with society because no human being alive without any human intervention, this
intervention might be from office or from a place where they live. If they are
separated from their lifestyle an uneven act will happen.
Impact of Social Recession
Social recession means the collapse of social contact. As
I discussed above human being is a social animal he cannot separate himself from
society as the human has become habitual of society. Here we will not discuss
whether society is good or bad for human but the impact from the collapse of
this social contact. People are connected with society at their offices, public
places, classes, residing places and etc. They are asked to maintain social
distancing due to coronavirus or COVID-19 outbreak and keep themselves home
quarantined and self-isolation even from their family members. This will lead
to the following problems which are based on various studies conducted on this
and an inquiry conducted by the author from his contacts:
- The decline in social interaction can cause psychological tension among society which felt people the change in mental and physical health like depression and obesity.
- Both loneliness (the feeling of being alone) and social isolation (physical state of being alone) can trigger a cascade of stress hormones that produce physiological changes like increased heart rate, increase muscle tension, and thinking of blood.
- Another study in perspective on psychological science
indicated that lack of social connection and living alone can be detrimental to
a person’s health, respectively increasing mortality risk by 29% and 32%.
- They also pointed out that it can increase the level of stress hormones and even accelerate
ageing.
- Most of the people have become keen toward online just to pass the time in self-isolation but, this time hackers are more active and personal data of people are at high risk. Recent news came from Singapore where hackers hacked the ZOOM app (online meeting app) and showed some obscene pictures on the screen which is harmful to societal contacts.
Coping with Social Recession
There is no immediate solution to deal with increasing
anxiety due to isolation; however, some action can be beneficial:
- Today’s era is of internet, people have end number of option to keep themselves busy and do something valuable via the internet might help to reduce their stress. One can work on his/her passion which has leftover or can start with the new one.
*Note:
one can refer my first BlogSpot posted on 20th April 2020 “Opportunities
Amidst Coronavirus outbreak: A social Message” for more details.
- People have to use this time to establish forgotten connections via technology and can catch up with friends and family.
- Most importantly, they
should put the focus back on self-care, take healthy food, exercise
regularly and find ways to calm.
